According to AAP, approximately 80% of American adults have had some form of periodontal diseases.
Periodontal diseases are infections of the teeth structures and they range from gum infection to serious disease that may damage the tissue and the bone that support the teeth.
Gingivitis
If plaque and tartar are present on teeth, they will cause inflammation of the gum also known as gingivitis. In gingivitis, the gums become swollen and sometimes bleed. Gingivitis can be cured by daily brushing and flossing and, of course, regular cleanings.
Periodontitis
Periodontitis is usually the next stage of gingivitis. Gums shift away from the inflammation around the teeth. If the periodontitis is not treated promptly, the teeth bones, gums and tissue that support the teeth may be damaged and eventually the teeth may become loose and will be lost.
